The ministry released a video outlining details of the Defense Forces’ transformation. It said Ukraine will introduce three new types of contracts for service members: an assault infantry contract for 10 or 14 months, a combat deployment contract for 24 months, and a basic contract for 24 months.
After a contract ends, service members will be guaranteed a deferment from mobilization that could exceed six months. Current contract holders will be able to re-sign under the new terms and have their already served time credited.
The ministry also said it will introduce a mission control system for assault troops and infantry to confirm presence at positions, ensure proper pay, and speed the evacuation of the wounded.
On May 1, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the start of an army reform that aims to strengthen the contract system so that by 2026 it will be possible to discharge earlier-mobilized service members.
On May 2, the parliamentary Defense Committee warned
that if everyone in the military signs new contracts, there will not be enough
funds to cover payments.
