Hamilton, president of the Delphi Global Research Center consultancy, said an upgraded system could be ready by the end of 2026 and that production might reach from a hundred to several hundred missiles a year. Ukrainian outlet Defense Express speculated that the program could help offset a shortfall of interceptors for U.S.-supplied Patriot systems.
Hamilton cautioned that the new system is unlikely to have an immediate impact, but over months and years it could partially fill needs currently met by Patriot batteries.
Analysts noted that Patriot’s chief value to Ukraine is its ability to intercept ballistic and hypersonic missiles, particularly with PAC-3 MSE interceptors. For a modernized S-300 to be a true alternative in that role, it would need to be capable of engaging weapons such as Russia’s Iskander-M, Kinzhal, Onyx, and Zircon missiles.
Defense Express recalled that Ukrainian firm Fire Point, working with European partners, is developing an anti-ballistic system called Freyja. Its FP-7X missile is being developed from the Soviet-era 48N6 missile used in S-300 and S-400 systems, an approach that leverages existing technologies and infrastructure.
“There is currently no definitive information about links between the projects,” Defense Express said.
“U.S. participation in Freyja, which uses European components, has not been mentioned, while the S-300 modernization is presented primarily as a Ukrainian-U.S. project. That may simply be nonpublic information, so it’s too early to draw conclusions.”
Even if upgraded S-300s cannot intercept ballistic targets,
they could help ease Ukraine’s broader shortage of air-defense missiles.
