The Russian military launched airstrikes on Snake Island in July to pressure civilian shipping, Natalia Humeniuk, spokesperson for the Southern Ukraine Defense Forces, said during a briefing on Aug. 3.

“The three air raids were deemed an aerial threat to foreign civilian vessels that might attempt to enter Ukrainian ports. All of this was aimed at continuing the pressure on civilian shipping, considering the future prospects of the grain deal,” she explained.

There were no direct hits to the island itself.

“The bombings targeted the vicinity of the island, but barely struck the island itself. There were conditional strikes on the waterline and the island’s coastline,” she added.

Snake Island, located in the western Black Sea, was liberated last summer when Ukrainian forces used powerful strikes to expel the Russian occupiers on June 30.

The Russian Defense Ministry, rather comically, labeled their military withdrawal from the island as a “goodwill gesture.”

Theoperation to liberate Snake Island was officially completed by July 4, and Ukrainian servicemen hoisted the flag of Ukraine on the island on July 7.

In July 2023, Russian forces dropped aerial bombs on Snake Island on three separate occasions. This occurred after Russia exited the grain deal.
