Ukrainian Ambassador to Turkey Nariman Dzhelyal presented Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan with a ceramic shield, a symbolic gift from the Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar peoples, Dzhelyal announced on Facebook, where he also shared photos on July 10.

A special gift for Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was created by Ukrainian ceramist and potter Rustem Skybin, an Honored Master of Folk Art of Ukraine and an artist of Crimean Tatar origin.

Nariman Dzhelyal, Ukraine’s ambassador to Turkey, explained the meaning behind the gift, called the Shield of Friendship (Dostluk Kalkanı).

At the center of the shield are three coats of arms symbolizing three nations — Ukrainian, Crimean Tatar, and Turkish — united by a shared history and a steadfast commitment to freedom. These symbols include Ukraine’s trident, the crescent and star of the Republic of Turkey, and the Taraq-Tamğa, the historic emblem of the Crimean Tatar people.

“These symbols, like three rivers merging into one, personify the highest values of humanity — friendship, solidarity, and resolute protection of life,” Dzhelyal said.

He also described the ornamental design surrounding the ceramic piece.

“Tulips in a traditional motif frame the shield, forming an unshakable line of defense, like brave warriors standing side by side. They are symbols of steadfastness, honor, and devotion to the defense of the Motherland. Between them are arrows — a sign of combat readiness and constant vigilance in the face of the enemy. The shape of the shield is not only a protective amulet but also a symbol of memory, honor, and invincible strength born in unity,” he wrote.

Skybin responded to Dzhelyal’s remarks with appreciation.

“Thank you, Nariman Bey, for your trust and warm words! It was important for me to create a symbolic work that reflects the connection of our peoples. Like this shield, you, Nariman Bey, are a strong link between us and stand in defense of our values. With respect!” Skybin wrote.

Nariman Dzhelyal is a Ukrainian Crimean Tatar politician, teacher, political scientist, and journalist. He has served as deputy chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People since 2013 and headed its information and analytical unit. He was imprisoned by Russia from 2021 to 2024 and returned to Ukraine on June 28, 2024.

On May 14, 2025, he was appointed Ukraine’s ambassador to Turkey. On July 8, he presented his credentials to President Erdoğan — and at the same time, presented him with the Shield of Friendship.
