The Ukrainian was arrested by law enforcement officers and subsequently searched.
"The authorities explained to the detainee that he is being held in connection with a criminal investigation into organizing group violence, and committing a criminal act upon public invitation," the report stated.
The detainee was taken to a city police station. A pepper spray and a mobile phone were confiscated from his backpack. These items have been sent for examination. The detained now faces up to nine years of imprisonment.
Ever since Georgian PM Irakli Kobakhidze announced that the country would drop its EU membership bid on Nov. 28, Tbilisi has been gripped by a mass protest movement, with riot police resorting to excessive use of force against unarmed protesters.
Georgia’s Health Ministry reported that 44 people were injured during the demonstration on Rustaveli Avenue on Dec. 1 alone.
