Ukraine was once again forced to reduce the output of its nuclear power plants after several high-voltage transmission lines were damaged in a Russian air strike on Feb. 26, Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal said.

“Unfortunately, we had emergency shutdowns of several high-voltage lines due to today’s attacks,” the minister wrote in a Telegram post.

“To balance the system, we had to reduce nuclear power generation.”

Shmyhal added that national grid operator Ukrenergo introduced harsher power outage schedules across central Ukraine.

He also said Ukrainian engineers are visiting Slovakia, Austria, and Croatia this week to discuss transferring equipment from decommissioned combined thermal power plants. Those talks were arranged at a ministerial meeting of the International Energy Agency in Paris earlier this month.

During the overnight attack into Feb. 26, Russian forces used 39 missiles and 420 strike drones against Ukraine. That included two Zircon hypersonic cruise missiles launched from occupied Crimea, targeting infrastructure in Kyiv Oblast.
