The Verkhovna Rada ratified the Rome Statute with 281 votes in favor, according to European Solidarity MP Oleksii Honcharenko.

The lawmaker says this will allow Ukraine to more effectively hold Russia accountable for its crimes and achieve several key goals:

  • Meet a major European integration requirement.
  • Simplify access to the ISS Trust Fund for Ukrainian victims of Russian crimes and increase the chances of receiving compensation.
  • Grant Ukraine influence and rights within the ISS, enabling it to participate in the election of International Court of Justice judges and nominate its own candidates.

The Rome Statute is the international treaty that established the ICC, outlining the court’s procedures and defining its jurisdiction over crimes.
