Grandi specified the assistance aims to help Ukrainians get through the next winter, which is going to be challenging after much of Ukraine’s energy system was destroyed by Russian air strikes.
“We appreciate today's announcement of a new aid package; amid constant attacks on energy facilities, this aid is crucial,” Zelenskyy said.
He emphasized Ukraine's need for additional support to rebuild destroyed homes and equip shelters in schools and hospitals, allowing Ukrainian refugees to return home.
Grandi noted this was his fifth visit to Ukraine since Russia’s invasion in February 2022.
The commissioner added that the purpose of these visits is to show donors the real situation in Ukraine, encouraging ongoing financial support for Ukrainians. He had visited some areas of Kyiv affected by the July 8 missile attack, including Okhmatdyt children’s hospital.
Zelenskyy and Grandi also announced a dedicated website, Ukraine Is Home, which, with UNHCR support, will provide key information for Ukrainians abroad planning to return home.
On June 20, the UNHCR representative in Ukraine, Karolina Lindholm Billing, said that without substantial assistance to restore Ukraine's energy infrastructure by winter, many Ukrainians would be forced to leave their communities.
