UN to vote on Ukraine peace resolution as war enters its third year

Ukraine, along with more than 50 co-sponsors, will present the draft resolution titled “Promoting a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in Ukraine.”

The resolution reaffirms commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders, including its territorial waters.

The session to review the resolution will begin at 10 a.m. New York time.

US position on UN resolution condemning Russia’s invasion

On Feb. 20, Reuters reported that, for the first time, the U.S. refused to co-sponsor a UN resolution in support of Ukraine.

John Kelley, political coordinator of the U.S. Mission to the UN, told Voice of America that Washington had not yet decided whether to support the resolution condemning Russia’s aggression ahead of the third anniversary of the invasion.

Later, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged UN member states to support an American version of the document, stating that it aligns with President Donald Trump’s vision of the UN returning to its core mission of maintaining international peace and security, including through the peaceful resolution of conflicts.

On Feb. 22, Reuters, AFP, and other media outlets reported that the U.S. introduced its own draft resolution for the war’s anniversary, incorporating Russian amendments and significantly differing from the version prepared by Ukraine and its European allies.

According to AFP, the U.S. draft omits references to Ukraine’s territorial integrity and contains no direct criticism of Russia—unlike the resolutions adopted in 2022 and 2023, which the U.S. had co-sponsored.
