UNESCO World Heritage List now includes Crimean Tatar decorative pattern

The Örnek – a traditional Crimean Tatar decorative pattern used on clothes, fabrics, jewelry, furniture, and in architecture – is to be included on the UNESCO World Heritage List, Ukraine’s culture minister announced on Dec. 16.

The decision to include the Örnek on the UNESCO list was made during a meeting of the organization’s Intergovernmental Committee on Dec. 16 in Paris.

“This is a clear victory for Ukraine,” Ukrainian Culture Minister Oleksandr Tkachenko said in a message posted on his Telegram channel on Dec. 16

“It signifies international recognition of the importance of Crimean culture, and the need to preserve it,” Tkachenko said.

“I would like to thank (former Culture Minister) Yevhen Nyshchuk for getting the ball rolling on this, and the ministries of culture and foreign affairs for seeing the whole thing through.”
