Task Force KleptoCapture, launched under the Joe Biden administration in 2022, aimed to isolate Russia by freezing the assets of Russian oligarchs linked to Vladimir Putin and prosecuting those involved in sanctions evasion. It was part of a push to freeze Russia out of global markets and enforce wide-ranging sanctions imposed on Moscow amid international condemnation of its war in Ukraine.
Prosecutors assigned to the task force will return to their previous posts. The changes will be in effect for at least 90 days and could be extended or made permanent. The emphasis on drug cartels comes after Trump designated many such groups as terrorist organizations, as part of a crackdown on illegal immigration and the fentanyl trade.
The move has elicited mixed reactions, as while combating drug cartels remains a priority for Washington, the termination of the effort could ease pressure on Russian elites, raising concerns among U.S. allies, including Ukraine.
