“We're not completely with a finalized project, but we hope that we're at a moment of convergence,” the unnamed source said.
“What could happen in the coming hours and days, there could be an announcement of a ceasefire either of 30 days or compartmentalized, which is still being discussed.”
Western diplomats are debating whether to announce a unilateral cease-fire immediately or to give Russia a brief window to respond. If Moscow declines, the United States and the European Union will impose additional sanctions. Officials on both sides are reportedly coordinating on a sanctions package.
“We are reaching a point where we will not wait for a formal response from Moscow to a joint proposal to declare this ceasefire,” the source added.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barro, who met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington last week, will join President Emmanuel Macron in Kyiv on May 10. The meeting will bring together Ukrainian partners who are considering committing troops to enforcing a potential ceasefire.
Political and technical negotiations between Europe and the United States have intensified since last week. On May 8, President Donald Trump and President Macron discussed the ceasefire efforts.
“We felt in the discussions with the Americans a certain irritation towards the Russian posture, the lack of reactivity and seriousness in its responses to what was proposed before,” the source said.
“The decision is practically taken.”
