Washington has extended the temporary protected status (TPS) for Ukrainian citizens until April 2025, Reuters reported on Aug. 18.

The extension means that Ukrainian refugees can legally remain in the United States until that date. The TPS was initially set to expire on Oct. 19, 2023.

“Russia’s ongoing military invasion of Ukraine and the resulting humanitarian crisis requires that the United States continue to offer safety and protection to Ukrainians who may not be able to return to their country,” said Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

“We will continue to offer our support to Ukrainian nationals through this temporary form of humanitarian relief.”

According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the extension affects 26,000 Ukrainians in the United States currently covered by TPS.
