U.S. National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and his deputy, Alex Wong, are leaving their White House positions, CBS News reported on May 1, citing multiple sources familiar with the matter.

Fox News, citing unnamed sources, said Waltz and Wong have already been dismissed.

Waltz came under intense scrutiny in March following a scandal involving a group chat on the Signal messaging app.

A CBS News source said U.S. President Donald Trump believed enough time had passed since the Signal scandal to present Waltz’s departure as part of a broader reorganization.

On March 24, Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Atlantic, said he was inadvertently added to a chat in which senior officials in the Trump administration discussed preparations for an air strike campaign against Yemeni Houthi forces. Goldberg initially disclosed few details about the incident but later released additional screenshots after U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, DNI Tulsi Gabbard, and CIA Director John Ratcliffe denied that classified information had been discussed.

Waltz later said he accepted full responsibility for creating the Signal group chat intended to discuss military strikes in Yemen. He suggested that the journalist's phone number had been mistakenly provided under another name—the individual he originally planned to add to the group.
