Negotiations on an exchange of uranium for frozen assets have been under way for some time, and the parties’ positions have reportedly grown closer. Previously, the United States had been prepared to release only $6 billion for Iran to purchase humanitarian goods such as food and medicine. Iran had sought $27 billion.
One source told Axios the U.S. proposed $20 billion. Another said swapping assets for uranium is just one option being discussed to end the conflict.
“According to two sources, the U.S was ready in an earlier stage of the negotiations to release $6 billion for Iran to purchase food, medicine and other humanitarian supplies. The Iranians demanded $27 billion,” the report added.
The plan also includes a voluntary moratorium on enrichment
in Iran. Under the proposal, Iran would be allowed to continue nuclear research
and work on medical isotopes, but only at above-ground facilities. The U.S.
insists on a 20-year moratorium, while Tehran wants a five-year pause.
Mediators are still trying to bridge the gap, sources said.
