Ukraine's existence could be threatened if “serious” peace talks do not begin by the summer, the country’s intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov said during a closed meeting in the parliament, NV’s sister publication Ukrainska Pravda wrote on Jan.27, citing an anonymous participant.

Representatives of the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and Budanov were invited by the parliament and faction leaders to report on the current situation on the front in order to understand the real state of affairs.

“If there are no serious negotiations by the summer, then very dangerous processes for the very existence of Ukraine may start,” Budanov said with a cold smile when asked how much time Ukraine has.

The information published in the media, both domestic and foreign, "does not correspond to reality at all," said the head of the National Security and Defense Council's Center for Countering Disinformation, Andriy Kovalenko, commenting on possible timeframes and date for the end of the war. Heavy fighting continues on the frontlines and Ukraine's national security sector must remain strong and focused on defense.

US President Donald Trump began his first days in office with a series of hard-line statements about Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, calling him “smart” and "disrespectful,."

“Russia never would have gone into Ukraine. I had a very strong understanding of Putin. That would have never happened, and it was very simple. He disrespects people. He’s smart. He understands. He disrespected Biden,” Trump said on Jan. 21.

He also criticized Putin for not making a deal and warned of imposing additional sanctions if the Kremlin did not come to the negotiating table over the war in Ukraine.

“We’re talking to Zelenskyy. He would like to have peace. But it takes two to tango. We‘re going to be talking with President Putin very soon, and we’ll see what –— how it all happens.

The war in Ukraine was also discussed in a recent phone call between Trump and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping.

"He (Putin) has a lot of power, like we have a lot of power. I said you guys should work it out," Trump said, accusing China of not doing enough to intervene to stop Russia's war on Ukraine.
