Magyar discussed the future of Budapest–Brussels relations, von der Leyen said in a
Twitter post on April 14.
“Hungary has returned to the very heart of Europe, where it has always belonged,” she wrote.
“This is, above all, a moment for the Hungarian people. For their voice, their dignity, and their future in a safe, prosperous Hungary inside a strong Europe.”
Von der Leyen stated that Hungary must reform its institutions to restore the rule of law after it was systematically eroded by PM Viktor Orban during his 16 years in office.
Magyar said he and the commission president agreed that
unblocking EU funds frozen over Orban’s policies is Hungary’s priority. He said
the new Hungarian government will make key decisions needed to release the
money and that the commission will work closely with the new authorities to
achieve results quickly.
