Von der Leyen survives European Parliament no-confidence vote

One motion filed by the far-right Patriots for Europe (PfE) group received 179 votes in favor, 378 against, and 37 abstentions. A second motion lodged by The Left group won 133 votes for, 383 against, and 78 abstentions. Neither motion achieved the required double majority.

Von der Leyen thanked MEPs for their support and pledged closer cooperation with the European Parliament to address Europe’s challenges.  

“I deeply appreciate the strong support received today,” she wrote in a Twitter post.

“The Commission will keep working closely with the European Parliament to tackle Europe’s challenges. And together deliver results for all European citizens. United for our people, our values and our future.”

Both motions were fueled by concerns over the trade deal the Commission has negotiated with the United States, according to the report. The Left also criticized von der Leyen for failing to address “Israel’s offensive in Gaza.”

Compared to the previous no-confidence vote on July 10, more MEPs have rallied to support the Commission President: that motion was defeated with 360 votes against.

In the same session, the European Parliament adopted a resolution endorsing Ukraine using Western weapons to strike deep inside Russia, calling on Kyiv’s international partners to lift any such remaining restrictions.
