Bulgarian activists say they have uncovered a compound affiliated with Russia’s Wagner Group private military company in the mountains above the village of Kladnitsa in Pernik Province, local news outlet Novinite reported on Feb. 9.

The report cited the civic association BOEC. According to BOEC head Georgi Georgiev, a group of activists located a site that they believe serves as a hub for “terrorist activity.”

Georgiev told Novinite that the site was heavily guarded by dog patrols and that access was strictly controlled. Activists provided video footage showing personnel dressed in uniforms bearing Wagner insignia. The building itself displayed a Russian flag and the Wagner emblem.

“People around the house wore clothing and headgear with the logo of the Russian paramilitary terrorist organization Wagner, which is under the control of Russian intelligence services,” Georgiev said.

BOEC has filed a complaint with Bulgaria’s Interior Ministry, reporting the presence of armed individuals and the use of symbols linked to a proscribed terrorist organization and the Russian state. The group also suggested that some of those on site may be current or former members of local security services, a factor it says could explain why no official action has yet been taken on the matter.
