“We are not reading too much into this at the moment but it is true that the US would not sign a statement on Ukraine that the other members of the G7 had agreed to,” the official said.
This follows an earlier report by Bloomberg on the same day that the US would not endorse a G7 statement condemning the deadly Russian strike because US officials feared it would harm ongoing negotiations with Moscow.
On Palm Sunday, April 13, Russian forces launched one of their deadliest attacks since the start of the full-scale invasion, striking the center of Sumy with ballistic missiles. Thirty five people, including two children, were killed, 117 others were injured.
“The enemy missiles struck an ordinary city street, ordinary life: homes, educational institutions, cars on the road… And this on a day when people go to church: Palm Sunday, the Feast of the Lord’s Entry into Jerusalem,” said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
