Russian state propaganda agency TASS reported only that the
meeting ended late at night. Putin’s aide Kirill Dmitriev, who is deeply
involved in attempts to entice the United States into forcing a Ukrainian capitulation,
made a laconic Twitter post on the matter: “Productive.”
Accompanied by U.S. President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, Witkoff arrived in Moscow to try and sell Putin on the U.S.-backed peace plan after it was heavily amended during negotiations with Ukraine and its European partners.
Recent media reports suggested the Kremlin will not accept anything short of Ukraine withdrawing from Donetsk Oblast, on top of full recognition of occupied Crimea and Donbas by both the United States and the EU.
On Dec. 1, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that
Kyiv and Washington are yet to resolve territorial questions in a way that is
acceptable to Ukraine and also aligns with the U.S. interpretation of Russian
demands.
