In a "joint statement on further deepening the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for a new era," they rejected Washington's "attempt to contain them" and said the Ukraine conflict could only be resolved by eliminating its "root causes," a phrase Putin has frequently used to justify his aggression against Ukraine.
Both leaders positioned themselves as alternative powers in a new world order without U.S. dominance, vowing to "increase interaction and strengthen cooperation."
"In today's challenging geopolitical situation and global uncertainty, the Russia-China foreign policy partnership is a key stabilizing factor on the international stage. Together we defend the formation of a more just and democratic multipolar world order," Putin said.
Xi described Beijing and Moscow as "stable, positive and progressive forces in the international community" and called for working together to "steer global governance in the right direction and promote inclusive economic globalization that benefits all."
The Chinese president is on a four-day state visit to Russia. He is a top guest among a handful of foreign leaders attending Putin's choreographed Victory Day military parade to mark the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.
