President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s former chief-of-staff Andriy Yermak did not ask the president for support in fighting money laundering charges in court, Yermak said on May 13.

Yermak made the remark in response to a question from a Censor.NET journalist about whether Zelenskyy had expressed support for him.

“I know the president is busy with important [duties] and, honestly, it would be wrong because the president must ensure an independent judiciary,” Yermak said.

“I didn’t reach out because I respect that he is still the president of Ukraine. He has many more important matters now; the country is at war.”

When asked whether U.S. actor Sean Penn, whom Yermak has previously called a “close friend,” had offered support, Yermak said, “First of all, I have been working with documents all these days. We didn’t speak by phone.” Asked whether he had received messages from Penn in messaging apps, Yermak said he “hadn’t seen” any.
