According to a statement by the President’s Office, participants in the ceremony placed candles at the memorial in the shape of a Menorah. Representatives of Jewish faith communities recited a memorial prayer.
Zelenskyy also thanked foreign diplomats who joined the commemoration.
“Thank you for standing with us today, with Ukraine,” the president said.
“I believe it’s a very important sign of your solidarity. Even in wartime, Ukraine never forgets Babyn Yar and the Holocaust. It is one of the greatest tragedies in the history of the world.”
During WWII, the Nazis shot 100,000 people at Babyn Yar, including nearly all of Kyiv’s Jewish population as well as members of other ethnic and religious groups. In just two days—Sept. 29 and 30, 1941—the Nazi occupiers killed more than 30,000 residents of the capital.
