Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has criticized the recent phone call between German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, describing it as "a Pandora's box."

In his Nov. 15 evening video address, Zelenskyy noted that the chancellor had informed him about the call with Putin.

"In my opinion, Olaf's call is a Pandora's box," said the president.

Zelenskyy warned that such interactions are precisely what Putin desires.

“This is exactly what Putin has wanted for a long time: it is extremely important for him to ease his isolation and Russia's isolation while engaging in routine talks that lead to nothing,” he added.

“This has been his approach for decades. This approach allowed Russia to make no changes to its policy, do nothing substantial, and that is exactly what led to this war.”

Earlier on Nov. 15, Scholz spoke with Putin by phone for the first time in nearly two years. During the conversation, Scholz condemned Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine and urged Putin to withdraw his troops. The chancellor also called on Russia to "be ready to negotiate with Ukraine to achieve a just and lasting peace."

Scholz further stated that Germany is prepared to support Ukraine for as long as necessary. Before speaking with Putin, Scholz also discussed the situation with Zelenskyy. After the call the chancellor spoke to Polish PM Donald Tusk.
