A source in the Polish government told the publication that Poland's Foreign Ministry had received a diplomatic note from the Ukrainian side regarding Zelenskyy's participation in the conference in Gdansk.
Former Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz had earlier suggested that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's visit to Poland could be canceled following a recent dispute over the decision to name a Ukrainian military unit after the Heroes of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA).
Ukrainian lawmaker Mykyta Poturaiev told PAP that the Ukrainian president "is expected to be" in Gdansk.
"Those plans exist, and I know that we are all planning to attend. Although I cannot speak on his behalf," Poturaiev said in an interview published on June 13.
About 5,000 guests, including heads of state, politicians and business representatives, are expected to attend the 2026 Ukraine Recovery Conference in Gdansk. Poland will host the summit for the first time. Previous editions were held in Lugano, Berlin, London and Rome.
A delegation from the European Commission is also expected to attend. It will likely include European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and four commissioners.
Tensions in Ukraine-Poland relations
On May 26, Zelenskyy signed Decree No. 440/2026 granting the Separate Special Operations Center North of Ukraine's Special Operations Forces an honorary title in honor of the Heroes of the UPA.
Following the decision, Polish President Karol Nawrocki proposed stripping Zelenskyy of the Order of the White Eagle, which had been awarded to the Ukrainian president in April 2023 by Nawrocki's predecessor, Andrzej Duda. Duda later said the award had been presented to Zelenskyy "at a different time and under different circumstances."
On June 8, Karol Nawrocki's spokesman, Rafał Leśkiewicz, said the chapter of the Order of the White Eagle had submitted recommendations to the Polish president regarding the possible revocation of the award. According to Leśkiewicz, Nawrocki will make a final decision "at the appropriate time."
