In an interview with The Guardian, Zelenskyy warned that if U.S. President Donald Trump halts military aid to Ukraine, Europe alone won't be able to "fill that gap."
“There are voices saying Europe can offer security guarantees without the Americans, and I always say 'no,” the president said.
“Security guarantees without America are not real security guarantees.”
French President Emmanuel Macron was the first Western leader to propose deploying a European peacekeeping force to enforce the eventual ceasefire in Ukraine. Zelenskyy stated that such a mission would only be effective if it is deployed on a large scale.
“Regarding Emmanuel's idea, if it's part of the security guarantees, then yes, if it's 100,000−150,000 European troops, then yes,” the Ukrainian leader continued.
“But even then, we won't be at the same level as the Russian army we're facing.”
In January, Bloomberg reported that European officials
sought commitments from the Trump administration to play a role in future
Western security guarantees for Ukraine.
