Ukraine had detected “specific activity” near its border with Belarus and warned that Kyiv was closely monitoring any changes, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on May 2.

“We are carefully recording everything, keeping everything under control and, if necessary, we will respond. Ukraine is ready to defend its people and its sovereignty, and everyone who is being pulled into any aggressive activity against Ukraine must understand that,” Zelenskyy said on May 2.

Zelenskyy did not specify what activity had been detected on the Belarusian side.

On April 23, Zelenskyy said he hoped Russia would fail to drag Belarus into its “sick, fantasy-driven ideas” about Ukraine.

“As for the threat of an offensive from Belarus, look, the Russians have many different sick, fantasy-driven ideas. So we very much do not want Belarus to be drawn into these fantasies and for them to become a terrible reality,” Zelenskyy said.

On April 17, Zelenskyy said, citing intelligence, that Belarus was building roads in border areas toward Ukrainian territory and preparing artillery positions.

“I instructed the relevant channels to warn Belarus’ de facto leadership that Ukraine is ready to defend its land and independence,” he said.

On April 20, State Border Guard Service spokesperson Andrii Demchenko said Ukrainian border guards had not detected any movement of equipment or troop buildup near the border inside Belarus.
