EU unveils 18th sanctions package targeting Russian oil
The European Commission is set to present its 18th package of sanctions targeting Russia, Rikard Jozwiak, Europe Editor for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty wrote on X on June 10.
“The European Commission will today present its new sanctions package to EU member states," he wrote.
"This will be the 18th package since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.”
Jozwiak added that a key proposal in the package is to lower the price cap on Russian oil from $60 to $45 per barrel.
On May 20, the European Union approved the 17th package of sanctions, targeting nearly 200 vessels in Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet.”
That same day, US State Secretary Marco Rubio claimed at a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing that threatening Russia with further sanctions could cause Moscow to withdraw from ceasefire negotiations.
Meanwhile, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said the US Senate is prepared to put a new sanctions bill to a vote if there is no progress in negotiations to end Russia’s war against Ukraine in the near future.
