Rikard Jozwiak: Slovakia blocks EU’s 19th sanctions package against Russia
Slovakia has blocked the European Union’s planned 19th sanctions package against Russia, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty journalist Rikard Jozwiak reported on Sept. 26.
According to Jozwiak, EU member state ambassadors held their first discussions on the package earlier in the day, but Slovakia immediately signaled it would not support it.
“It’s unlikely there will be a green light before next week’s summits in Copenhagen. Slovakia is blocking it for now,” Jozwiak wrote.
On Sept. 19, the European Commission approved the 19th package of sanctions against Russia, targeting its financial sector. The new restrictions focus on cryptocurrency, banks, and Russia’s energy industry.
On Sept. 16, Bloomberg reported, citing an unnamed European diplomat, that the EU had postponed presenting the package—originally scheduled for Sept. 17—after U.S. President Donald Trump pushed for tougher European measures as a condition for advancing U.S. sanctions.
Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry later dismissed that report as speculation.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.
For the past five years, The New Voice of Ukraine has been working tirelessly to push back against Russian narratives and defend democracy. But we cannot do it alone.
