Ukraine targets Russian oil giant: Tatneft assets to be seized
Ukraine’s Ministry of Justice has filed a lawsuit with the High Anti-Corruption Court (HACC) seeking the seizure of assets belonging to Tatneft, one of Russia’s largest oil conglomerates, officials wrote on Jan. 27.
The legal proceedings mark another step in Ukraine’s efforts to seize Russian assets tied to war financing and redirect them to state control.
Over 20 individuals and companies linked to Tatneft have been named in the case, including the company’s top management led by Rustam Minnikhanov.
Deputy Justice Minister Inna Bohatykh commented on the case.
"The assets in question include corporate rights of enterprises operating gas station networks, oil depots, fuel stations, vehicles, and specialized equipment across Ukraine’s Kharkiv and Poltava oblasts, estimated to be worth around UAH 2 billion ($52 million)," she said.
Tatneft’s role in funding Russia’s war
Tatneft is a major Russian oil refining company that not only contributes substantial tax revenues to the Russian government — funding its war efforts — but also directly supplies fuel to Russia’s military-industrial complex through its Taneco refinery in Tatarstan.
Ukraine's previous steps against Tatneft
In June 2024, Ukraine’s Antimonopoly Committee approved the transfer of Tatneft's assets to Ukrnafta, Ukraine’s state oil and gas company.
These assets include over 110 facilities, namely gas stations, oil depots, and other commercial properties in Poltava and Kharkiv oblasts. However, Ukrnafta reported that most of these facilities were in poor condition at the time of transfer.
