Cyprus to install monument honoring Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko

A monument to Ukrainian poet, writer and artist Taras Shevchenko is set to be installed in the Republic of Cyprus, Ukraine's embassy in Cyprus announced.
The monument was created by renowned Ukrainian sculptors Oles Sydoruk and Borys Krylov, both members of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine and the Royal British Society of Sculptors.
The initiative was launched by Ukraine's Ambassador to Cyprus Serhii Nizhynskyi.
"We joined the creation of this memorial with great honor and pride, understanding its important mission — to carry Ukrainian language, culture and the enduring spiritual legacy of Taras Shevchenko to the world," Sydoruk said.
The embassy is currently negotiating with local authorities to determine the final location for the monument in one of Cyprus' cities.
Ukraine's Hert Special Purpose Regiment supported the project's production, helping bring the initiative to completion.
According to the embassy, the site will serve as a gathering place for the Ukrainian community and a space dedicated to preserving historical memory.
"Ukrainians, representatives of diplomatic and government missions, cultural figures, clergy and friends of Ukraine from around the world will gather at the monument to honor the Great Kobzar," the embassy said, referring to Shevchenko by his widely used honorific title.
The memorial includes an additional commemorative element dedicated to Shevchenko, created in cooperation with Ukrainian foundry Sayamat.
The granite pedestal features a traditional Ukrainian embroidered towel motif, along with a facsimile of Shevchenko's signature and a quill pen.
The monument combines two materials — light-colored granite and bronze.
"The installation of a bust of Taras Shevchenko in Cyprus symbolizes Ukraine's spiritual presence in the world," Ambassador Nizhynskyi said.
"The monument is intended to strengthen cultural, spiritual and humanitarian ties between Ukraine and Cyprus, reinforcing Ukraine's standing as a European nation with a rich history, culture and resilient people."
