Norwegian crown princess’s son charged with rape and assault
Norwegian prosecutors have formally charged Marius Borg Høiby, the 28-year-old son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit, with 32 criminal offenses, including four counts of rape, Reuters reported on Aug. 18.
The charges include one count of rape involving sexual intercourse and three counts of rape without intercourse. Prosecutors said Høiby recorded some of the incidents on his phone. He also faces charges of domestic violence, assault, and other offenses.
Høiby’s attorney said he denies the most serious charges, including rape and domestic abuse, but plans to plead guilty to some lesser offenses during trial.
If convicted on the most serious charges, Høiby could face up to 10 years in prison. He is expected to stand trial early next year.
Høiby is the stepson of Crown Prince Haakon, heir to the Norwegian throne, and the son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit from a previous relationship. He does not hold a royal title but previously lived with the royal couple and their two children, Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus.
“The courts must consider this case and make their decision,” the royal family said in a statement.
Høiby was first detained in August 2024 after allegedly assaulting a woman he was in a relationship with. She was treated for a concussion. He spent 30 hours in custody. In November, he was arrested again after another woman accused him of raping her while she was unconscious. He spent about a week in jail before being released.
In June, Oslo police formally charged him with rape, violence, and assault. Authorities have said the number of alleged victims could be in double digits.
