A Russian drone, not a balloon, as previously reported, caused an air raid alert in the Ukrainian capital city of Kyiv and Kyiv Oblast on March 1, the Kyiv Regional Military Administration reported on the Telegram messenger.
According to the local authorities, it was possible to identify the object after it was shot down by air defense forces.
In a comment to the Ukrainska Pravda online newspaper, Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yuriy Ihnat said that Ukrainian Air Defense had shot down an enemy drone over Kyiv Oblast.
“A UAV was detected during an air raid alert in Kyiv Oblast on March 1,” he said.
“Combat work was conducted on it by air defense means. The target was hit.”
Ihnat added the type of drone would be established after its wreckage was found.
An air raid alert was triggered in the Ukrainian capital city of Kyiv and the surrounding oblast in the afternoon on March 1 when an unidentified aerial object was spotted approaching from the north.
Later, the Kyiv Regional Military Administration said it was likely a small balloon.
