Cat found alive in Kyiv building rubble after spending several days trapped
A cat who spent several days trapped beneath the rubble of Kyiv building, destroyed in Russia's deadly attack on June 17, was found alive, Kyiv DTEK Electric Networks reported on Facebook on July 19.
The energy workers, who were dealing with the attack aftermath, shared a storyof the animal's rescue.
“Thursday. Kyiv still breathes dust after the strike. We’re working among debris: cables, concrete, dust… And suddenly — a barely noticeable movement in the corner. Alive. A kitty.
Her fur burned, her whole body trembling, eyes wide like a universe of fear.
She spent several days beneath the wreckage. In darkness. Among explosions. Alone.
We tried to get her out — carefully, step by step. But she broke free. Ran. Far, as fast as she could. Stress. Instinct. Life.”
The company asked Ukrainians to help the cat if they saw it and to contact animal rescue volunteers or DTEK directly.
Soon after, animal welfare activist Alina Bodnar commented that the cat had been found and taken to a veterinary hospital.
It turned out the cat was rescued by local volunteers helping victims near the scene of the missile strike. Instagram user Anna Herez shared the animal's condition.
“The cat was diagnosed with:
– Toxicity due to 1st–2nd degree burns
– Tail injury with traumatic amputation
– Risk of burn shock
– Bladder paresis
– Toxic hepatitis
– Suspected kidney failure
'She’s incredibly strong, tried to bite (no claws) even under sedation. The next few days are critical,'” Anna wrote.
The clinic also updated on her condition after the first night of treatment:
“Her temperature has normalized, we fed her through a syringe because she won’t eat on her own (likely because her nose is completely burned)," the vets wrote.
"She didn’t spit the food out and swallowed well.
She’s still extremely scared — terrified of human hands.”
