European Commission approves $7B military aid package for Ukraine

The European Commission announced a new $7.1B (€6.1 B) defense support package for Ukraine on its Independence Day, allocating funds for critical air defense assets amid intensified Russian aerial attacks, Ursula von der Leyen announced on Aug. 24.
The European Commission approved funding for air and missile defense systems, interceptor missiles, munitions, and radar stations that Ukraine requires on an expedited basis.
"Europe stands with you today, tomorrow, and for as long as it takes," von der Leyen emphasized.
The Commission President underscored that in response to escalating Russian aerial strikes, Europe is expanding its support to enable Ukraine to protect its citizens and sovereign airspace.
Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrii Sybiha earlier noted that new international defense aid announcements were scheduled for Aug. 24.
Several prominent European leaders arrived in Kyiv on Aug. 24, including President of the European Council António Costa, Prime Minister of Luxembourg Luc Frieden, President of Moldova Maia Sandu, President of Estonia Alar Karis, and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Andy Burnham, marking the UK Prime Minister’s first official foreign visit.
Concurrently, a meeting of the "Coalition of the Willing" convened in Kyiv on Aug. 24 at 1 p.m. local time in a hybrid format, featuring both in-person attendees and virtual participants. NATO was represented by Deputy Secretary General Radmila Šekerinska alongside European Council President António Costa, while French President Emmanuel Macron participated via videoconference.
