An emergency incident involving an explosion followed by secondary detonations occurred at a training ground belonging to a military unit in Khmelnytskyi Oblast on July 31, Ukraine's Special Operations Forces said in a statement.
Information on casualties is still being confirmed, and the circumstances and causes of the incident are under investigation.
Emergency services are working at the scene, and efforts to address the aftermath are ongoing, the Special Operations Forces said.
Khmelnytskyi Mayor Oleksandr Symchyshyn said that a number of residential buildings and municipal structures were damaged by the explosions. A zone around the site, marking a possible debris radius, has been cordoned off, and police have issued public notifications. Public transport routes in the city have also been changed.
Earlier on July 31, a series of explosions was heard in Khmelnytskyi without an air raid alert being issued beforehand. Serhii Tiurin, head of the regional military administration, said no information on casualties had been received at that time. Local social media channels reported columns of smoke over the city and a secondary detonation.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.
For the past five years, The New Voice of Ukraine has been working tirelessly to push back against Russian narratives and defend democracy. But we cannot do it alone.
