Kyiv implements cogeneration units to enhance energy security
Kyiv has installed its first cogeneration gas-piston unit with a capacity of 1.5 MW, the city's mayor, Vitaliy Klitschko, announced on Telegram on Nov. 7.
The equipment was installed with the support of USAID and the Energy Security Project at one of the city's critical infrastructure facilities.
"Kyiv has requested an additional 15 cogeneration units, which are expected to arrive in batches over the next year," Klitschko said.
“The goal is to achieve an additional total capacity of approximately 170 MW within a year.”
In June 2024, Kyivteploenergo signed a contract with KTS Engineering for the purchase of 15 cogeneration units from the Austrian company INNIO Jenbacher, with a total capacity of 60.5 MW, for 1.125 billion hryvnias ($27.2 million).
Additionally, Kyivteploenergo plans to increase the capacity of Kyiv's TPP-5 by installing cogeneration units with a total electrical capacity of 70 MW. On June 19, the utility company signed an agreement with Energotechprom for the development of the corresponding project documentation for 50.5 million hryvnias ($1.2 million).
It was previously reported that on June 11, during a speech at the opening ceremony of the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Berlin, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine, with the help of its partners, plans to build up to 1 GW of gas maneuvering generation in 2024 and an additional 4 GW in the coming years.
