Latvia summons Russian envoy over crashed strike drone
The Latvian Foreign Ministry has summoned Russia’s chargé d'affaires after an explosive-laden Russian one-way strike drone crashed in Latvia’s Latgale region, the ministry said in a press release on Sept. 9.
The ministry demanded a full explanation regarding the incident in which a Russian UAV unlawfully violated Latvian airspace and carried explosives on board.
“During the meeting, the Russian representative confirmed that they would inform the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs about the situation,” the statement said.
Latvia continues to conduct a detailed investigation into the incident, reporting its findings to NATO allies and EU countries.
The UAV entered Latvian airspace on Sept. 7, during a Russian attack on Ukraine, ultimately crashing in the Rezekne District in eastern Latvia. This is the first time a Russian military drone breached Latvian airspace.
Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs stressed the importance of a joint response to incidents involving Russian drones, noting that "the number of such cases on NATO's eastern flank is increasing."
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.
For the past five years, The New Voice of Ukraine has been working tirelessly to push back against Russian narratives and defend democracy. But we cannot do it alone.
