Lithuania backs Czech plan to buy artillery shells for Ukraine
Vilnius will join Czechia’s
initiative to procure artillery ammunition for Ukraine from outside the EU,
Lithuanian PM Ingrida Šimonytė announced on March 4.
"This is a very important initiative, especially at a time when the supply of munitions to Ukraine has slowed," said Šimonytė.
The PM added that the countries involved in the initiative are jointly financing the purchase of 155mm and 152mm artillery shells from third parties, which will then be transferred to Ukraine.
Šimonytė reiterated Lithuania's commitment to supporting Ukraine in its ongoing defense against Russian aggression.
Prague found hundreds of thousands of artillery munitions abroad that could be transferred to Ukraine if other countries help with funding, Czech President Petr Pavel said during the Munich Security Conference on Feb.17.
The EU will only supply Ukraine with 52% of the 1 million artillery shells promised by March 2024, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said on Jan. 31.
