France open to sending troops to Ukraine to aid postwar stability
French President Emmanuel Macron has voiced support for the deployment of foreign troops to Ukraine to help stabilize the country once fighting with Russia subsides, according to his May 10 interview with Le Parisien.
“We’re talking about a presence that supports stabilization,” Macron said. “It’s about being there — in the air, in strategic areas, away from the front lines — to show solidarity and offer support as a second line of defense.”
While Macron didn’t provide exact figures, he said the contingent could number in the thousands, but not “hundreds of thousands.”
He emphasized that sheer numbers aren’t the issue. “The largest army in Europe today is Ukraine’s — with a million mobilized troops. No other army can match that. What matters is that troops are present on Ukrainian soil,” Macron noted.
The president also confirmed that discussions with European allies on this matter are ongoing.
