NATO prepares defensive response to Russian drone incursions into Poland — Bloomberg

NATO is preparing military defense measures to strengthen deterrence on the Alliance’s eastern flank in response to Russian drones violating Polish airspace, Bloomberg reported on Sept. 11.
A political response is also expected. The first reaction came on Sept. 10, when NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and other Alliance leaders condemned Russia’s "irresponsible behavior."
The coordination of the military response will be handled by General Christopher G. Cavoli, NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, who oversees the planning and execution of all Alliance military operations.
According to Bloomberg’s source, his command is now analyzing the situation and determining what resources should be deployed if necessary.
“In the long run, more must be done," Cavoli said at a conference in Vilnius.
"There are advancements in weapons systems that can reduce the operational costs facing our nations, and we will continue to push these developments across the Alliance.”
He stressed that the Alliance “will draw lessons, we will learn what is needed to strengthen our posture to counter these limited intrusions.”
Russian drone attack on Poland
On Sept. 10, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk reported that 19 Russian drones entered Polish airspace overnight, most of them from Belarus. Four were reportedly shot down. The Interior Ministry also confirmed that fragments of an unidentified missile were found.
One of the drones crashed into a residential house in the village of Wyriki-Wola in Lublin Voivodeship. The building was damaged, but no casualties were reported.
Warsaw called an emergency government meeting and increased security measures. NATO later invoked Article 4, which triggers consultations among member states if one of them feels threatened.
On Sept. 11, Der Spiegel reported that Russian drones were likely targeting a logistics hub in Rzeszów, where German troops stationed at the airfield detected drone activity on radar.
