Rostyslav Yanchyshen, a ballet dancer with the Odesa Opera and Ballet Theater, has been killed at the front during a combat mission, the head of the theater’s ballet troupe, Garri Sevoyan, wrote on Facebook on April 20.

Yanchyshen has been the ballet dancer with the Odesa Opera for more than 10 years. He immediately joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine when Russia launched the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

“A smart, decent, kind, intelligent, educated, all-around person of his word,” Sevoyan wrote.

“He was the first to go to defend his homeland, not on a call, not on a summons. He went himself. And when he wasn’t accepted into the Armed Forces of Ukraine, he joined the territorial defense forces.”

The team of the Odesa Opera expressed sincere condolences to Yanchyshen’s family and relatives.

The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.

Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.

For the past five years, The New Voice of Ukraine has been working tirelessly to push back against Russian narratives and defend democracy. But we cannot do it alone.
