Warsaw outlines new anti-drone shield for eastern frontier

Poland plans to complete the construction of a fortified anti-drone defense system along its eastern border within two years, with the project estimated to cost €2 billion ($2.17 billion).
The plan was outlined by Polish Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk in an interview with The Guardian.
Tomczyk said the first elements of the system could become operational within about six months, possibly sooner. Full deployment of the infrastructure is expected to take up to 24 months.
The new air defense assets will be integrated into an existing defensive line built roughly a decade ago. According to Tomczyk, the system will combine machine guns, missile-based air defense systems, and electronic warfare capabilities designed to suppress drones.
Some components, including multi-barrel machine guns, are intended for use exclusively during wartime, he said.
In November, Tomczyk said Poland intends to build its own counter-drone system without waiting for the European Union’s proposed “Drone Wall” initiative. He explained that the system will consist of multiple sensors and engagement tools operating simultaneously—first detecting and identifying airborne threats, then neutralizing them.
