Poland sanctions Lukashenko's regime
Poland has imposed sanctions against 365 Belarusian
citizens, as Alexander Lukashenko's regime ramps up the repressions of its
citizens, Poland's Internal Ministry said in a message on its website on May
29.
The sanctions include freezing their finances, with assets freezes of 20 organizations and 16 individuals, predominantly linked to Moscow.
The sanctions apply to 159 MPs, 76 judges, seven prosecutors, 32 local government representatives, and 28 Belarusian law enforcement officers. The sanctions list also includes 23 propagandists from pro-government media, 24 athletes, and eight representatives of state-owned enterprises.
“In addition, the list includes entrepreneurs associated with Russian capital, including 15 Russian citizens and one Belarusian,” the message said.
“Also, 20 business entities (19 tied to Russia and one to Belarus) are under sanctions.”
Polish authorities believe these individuals support Lukashenko's regime and have participated in legitimizing and supporting the repressive policies of the Minsk government.
On Feb. 10, Poland unilaterally closed one of its largest border crossings with Belarus, Bobrowniki. On Feb. 21, Poland closed its last truck border crossing with Belarus.
Polish PM Mateusz Morawiecki has suggested that Poland could close all its border crossings with Belarus due to escalating tensions.
