Rescue teams end 28-hour search in Kyiv after Russian high-rise strike

A 28-hour search and rescue operation at the site of a Russian missile strike on a residential building has concluded in Kyiv’s Darnytskyi district, State Emergency Service (SES) reported on May 15.
At least 24 people are confirmed dead, including three children, while another 48 individuals sustained injuries. Emergency crews worked continuously to clear more than 3,000 cubic meters of destroyed building structures.
Psychological support was provided to approximately 400 people at the scene by specialists from the SES and the National Police, who assisted the victims and their families throughout the ordeal. Officials noted that the mission has now transitioned from a rescue operation to emergency restoration work.
The May 14 mass attack on Kyiv
The tragedy in the Darnytskyi district was part of a massive coordinated attack on May 14, when Russian forces targeted the capital with cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and drones. Preliminary reports indicated that a Kh-101 cruise missile struck the high-rise, causing an entire section of the building to collapse. Among the victims were two girls, aged 12 and 13.
The assault caused further damage in the Holosiivskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, Obolonskyi, and Dniprovskyi districts. According to the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Russia launched a total of 56 missiles and 675 UAVs during the overnight attack, with Kyiv being the key target. Ukrainian air defense successfully intercepted 652 drones and 41 missiles in the historic bombardment.
