Russia counterattacks near Kupyansk – Ground Forces commander

17 July 2023, 08:12 PM

The frontline situation in eastern Ukraine continues to remain fraught as Russian forces launch an offensive near Kupyansk in Kharkiv Oblast, Military Media Center reported on July 17, citing the Commander of Ukraine’s Ground Forces, Lt. Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi.

Syrskyi underscored the complexity of the operational landscape in eastern Ukraine.

He indicated that Russian troops are actively mobilizing additional forces and resources, primarily comprising airborne troops, towards Bakhmut, Donetsk Oblast, in an attempt to halt the Ukrainian advance there.

Syrskyi highlighted that the occupiers have begun an attack in the Kupyansk sector with the intention of overpowering the Armed Forces of Ukraine stationed in the area and pushing further into Kyiv’s defensive lines.

"In the face of such challenging circumstances, I visited our combat brigades and conferred with unit commanders to refine our plans and address emergent issues directly," he said.

Syrskyi indicated that, in concert with the commanders, he developed and implemented necessary measures to stabilize the situation near Lyman, Donetsk Oblast.

He also noted that the commanders are aware of the significance of their assigned tasks, which encompass the elimination of the enemy, and maintaining the operational momentum by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Syrskyi also awarded officers of the frontline brigades for outstanding service.

The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.

Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.

For the past five years, The New Voice of Ukraine has been working tirelessly to push back against Russian narratives and defend democracy. But we cannot do it alone.
