Russian forces attacked passenger train No. 122 traveling from Kyiv to Mykolaiv, state rail operator Ukrzaliznytsia reported on Sept. 16.
"The enemy continues its hunt for passenger trains," the company said in an official statement.
"Thanks to an advance warning from Ukrzaliznytsia’s monitoring team, the locomotive and train crews, as well as the passengers, were successfully evacuated."
The company confirmed that no injuries or fatalities were sustained in the strike.
Russian strikes on civilian passenger trains
Sept. 13 border attack: Russian forces launched a drone strike on a passenger train near the Yahodyn border checkpoint in Volyn Oblast, just two kilometers from the Polish border. The train was en route from Kyiv to Warsaw; an emergency evacuation prevented casualties.
VIP evacuations: According to Der Spiegel, the Yahodyn attack forced the emergency evacuation of European political delegations departing Ukraine, including former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, European government security advisors, German Bundestag members, diplomats, and academic researchers. The train had been stopped ahead of time due to incoming threat alerts.
Diplomatic target: Ukrzaliznytsia stated that a train carrying European diplomats departed the Yahodyn station shortly before the incoming strike hit the locomotive. Former CIA Director David Petraeus was aboard a second train stopped at the station at the exact moment of the attack. Railway authorities did not rule out that the jet-powered strike drone was intentionally targeting the diplomatic convoy, which departed early to evade the UAV threat.
