A Russian drone violated the airspace of Romania during an overnight attack on Ukraine, the country’s Defense Ministry said on Apr. 17.
At 12:43 a.m., residents in the northern part of Tulcea County received a RO-ALERT warning about a threat.
Romania’s air defense systems detected two aerial targets that appeared in the border area.
One of the targets entered Romanian airspace, but radar contact was lost 16 kilometers southeast of the commune of Chilia Veche, over an uninhabited area. The air raid alert was lifted at 2:48 a.m.
Romania’s Defense Ministry said experts would head to the area in the morning to conduct a search operation.
The ministry also condemned Russia’s actions, saying they pose a threat to regional security and violate international law.
Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia attacked Ukraine overnight with one Iskander-M ballistic missile and 172 drones, including Shahed, Gerbera and Italmas types, as well as other UAVs. Ukraine’s air defenses shot down 147 enemy drones.
Overnight on April 17, Russia attacked Chernihiv with Shahed drones, partially cutting off electricity to the city. In the morning, Russian forces struck Dnipro, damaging a transport company and a trolleybus.
In Odesa Oblast, the attack damaged port, transport and residential infrastructure. Fires broke out at several locations, including within the Danube Biosphere Reserve.
