Ukraine braces for potential Russian assault on on key Donbas town Toretsk

3 August 2024, 02:50 PM

Military analyst Denys Popovych discussed the situation near Toretsk and the potential threat of a Russian incursion into the city during a broadcast on Radio NV.

"Sabotage groups sometimes make incursions into Toretsk. They do operate there, and our forces push them out, but the Russian army is not currently in Toretsk in significant numbers. However, they are getting close. The Russian troops are near Zalizne, which is about as far from Toretsk as Vyshneve is from Kyiv—a very short distance," Popovych said.

He noted that the enemy is advancing largely due to their significant manpower advantage, which they "relentlessly throw into battle," as well as their extensive use of guided bombs.

"Because of this, there's a high likelihood that the enemy will continue to advance and eventually enter Toretsk. We can now confirm that the battle for this city has already begun or is on the verge of starting. It is likely to play a key role in the spring-summer campaign that the Russian army is currently attempting to carry out," Popovych added.

On July 28, the Institute for the Study of War reported that Ukrainian Defense Forces had regained positions near Toretsk.

On July 30, analysts from DeepState reported ongoing battles on the outskirts of Toretsk in the Donetsk region, specifically around the settlements of Zalizne and Pivnichne.

In its August 1 update, the Institute for the Study of War noted that Russian forces had advanced within Zalizne, southeast of Toretsk.

DeepState analysts reported on August 3 that the aggressor nation's army had advanced in two settlements in the Donetsk region, closing to within about 100 meters of Toretsk.

The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
